Lateral Lumbar Fusion

Lateral lumbar fusion is a spinal surgery that stabilizes diseased or degenerated lumbar segments by placing an implant between adjacent vertebrae through a side-based approach. The procedure removes the damaged intervertebral disc, inserts a bone-filled interbody cage to restore disc height and alignment, and promotes bone growth across the motion segment; approaches that pass through or around the psoas muscle require careful consideration of nearby lumbar nerves. In neuroscience and spine research, lateral lumbar fusion is used to treat conditions such as degenerative disc disease, deformity, and instability, with outcomes assessed through pain relief, neural decompression, spinal alignment, and functional recovery.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.
