Neurophysiological Biomarkers

Neurophysiological biomarkers are measurable features of nervous system activity or function that provide objective information about neural state, disease, or treatment response. They arise from processes such as synchronized electrical activity recorded by electroencephalography, stimulus-evoked responses, muscle and nerve conduction, or changes in functional brain activity, linking physiological signals to underlying neural circuits. In neuroscience, these biomarkers support diagnosis and classification of neurological and psychiatric disorders, track disease progression, evaluate therapeutic effects, and advance research on brain function. Their use can improve patient stratification and enable more precise, biologically informed approaches to monitoring and intervention.

An Introduction to Neurophysiology

2023

Neurophysiology is broadly defined as the study of nervous system function. In this field, scientists investigate the central and peripheral nervous systems at the level of whole organs, cellular networks, single cells, or even subcellular compartments. A unifying feature of this wide-ranging discipline is an interest in the mechanisms that lead to the generation and propagation of electrical impulses within and between neurons. This subject is important not only for our understanding of the...

Attention control comprises enhancement of target signals and attenuation of distractor signals. We describe an approach to measure separately but concurrently, the neurophysiology of attending and ignoring in sustained intermodal attention, utilizing a passive control condition during which neither process is continuously engaged.

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

An Overview of bGDGT Biomarker Analysis for Paleoclimatology

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...
