Open Source Imaging

Open source imaging is an approach to acquiring, processing, and sharing images with openly available hardware designs, software, data, or analysis workflows. In neuroscience, it supports transparent examination of neural structure, activity, and connectivity while reducing dependence on proprietary tools. Researchers can combine community-developed microscopes or sensors with computational pipelines that convert raw image data into measurements through segmentation, registration, quantification, and visualization, using parameters that others can inspect and reproduce. This framework improves collaboration, lowers barriers to specialized imaging, and helps validate findings across laboratories, making it useful for studies of neuronal morphology, circuit dynamics, and disease mechanisms.

This article describes how to record amygdala activity with magnetoencephalography (MEG). In addition this article will describe how to conduct trace fear conditioning without awareness, a task that activates the amygdala. It will cover 3 topics: 1) Designing a trace conditioning paradigm using backward masking to manipulate awareness. 2) Recording brain activity during the task using magnetoencephalography. 3) Using source imaging to recover signal from subcortical structures.

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Misinformation & Source Credibility

2026

The rapid expansion of online information has increased access to knowledge while also increasing the risk of misinformation. Sources that appear authoritative may lack scholarly rigor, which makes credibility assessment a critical part of research literacy. Evaluating the reliability of information helps prevent the inclusion of weak, biased, or misleading material in academic work. Publication Source and Authorship A primary consideration is the publication source. Scholarly journals and...
