Prey Capture Behavior

Prey capture behavior is the coordinated sequence of sensory, motor, and decision-making actions animals use to detect, pursue, and consume prey, making it a valuable model for studying neural control of behavior. In neuroscience, sensory signals about a potential target are transformed into orienting movements, pursuit, attack, and feeding through interactions among brain circuits, motor systems, and environmental cues. Studying these behaviors helps researchers link neural activity to natural actions, examine how animals select targets and adjust movements, and identify principles of sensorimotor integration. This work also informs research on motivation, decision-making, behavioral evolution, and disorders that disrupt coordinated movement.

Predator-Prey Interactions

2026

Predators consume prey for energy. Predators that acquire prey and prey that avoid predation both increase their chances of survival and reproduction (i.e., fitness). Routine predator-prey interactions elicit mutual adaptations that improve predator offenses, such as claws, teeth, and speed, as well as prey defenses, including crypsis, aposematism, and mimicry. Thus, predator-prey interactions resemble an evolutionary arms race.Although predation is commonly associated with carnivory, for...

ELISA-Based Method to Analyze Interactions between Bait and Prey Proteins

2025

This video describes an ELISA-based technique that detects protein-protein interactions between two proteins by measuring the binding of the second protein to the immobilized first protein. The bound second protein is detected using specific antibodies labeled with an enzyme, such as horseradish peroxidase.

Laboratory Estimation of Net Trophic Transfer Efficiencies of PCB Congeners to Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) from Its Prey

2014

A technique for laboratory estimation of net trophic transfer efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners to piscivorous fish from their prey is presented. To maximize applicability of the laboratory results to the field, the piscivorous fish should be fed prey fish that are typically eaten in the field.
