Selective Spinal Manipulation

Selective spinal manipulation is a targeted manual therapy that applies controlled movement or force to specific spinal segments identified through clinical assessment. By directing mobilization to selected joints, the technique alters mechanical loading and stimulates joint, muscle, and skin mechanoreceptors, which can influence spinal reflex activity and sensorimotor processing in the nervous system. In neuroscience and musculoskeletal research, selective spinal manipulation helps investigate how spinal inputs affect pain, proprioception, motor control, and functional movement. Its targeted approach also supports studies comparing segment-specific treatment with broader manual techniques and clarifying the neural mechanisms underlying therapeutic outcomes.

Cited by 1 •

2024

This study illustrates the effect of selective spinal manipulation on the growth and development of infant rats with cerebral palsy, emphasizing the specific procedure and standardized protocol. Body weight measurement, Rotarod test, Foot-fault score, other behavioral tests, and growth hormone detection were performed to evaluate the protocol.

Stereotaxic Injection of a Viral Vector for Conditional Gene Manipulation in the Mouse Spinal Cord

Viral vectors allow for targeted gene manipulation. We demonstrate a method for conditional gene expression or ablation in the mouse spinal cord, using stereotaxic injection of a viral vector into the dorsal horn, a prominent site of synaptic contact between primary somatosensory afferents and neurons of the central nervous system.

Selective Manipulation of Theta Oscillations in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates a protocol to modulate theta oscillations in a genetically engineered mouse model with light-sensitive ion channels in its GABAergic medial septum neurons. By delivering light pulses to the hippocampus, the protocol aims to synchronize neuronal activity and generate theta oscillations, which are recorded as local field potentials.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

Cited by 50 •

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

Trans-Spinal Direct Current Stimulation of a Rat's Spinal Motoneuron

2025

This video describes the in vivo intracellular recording of rat motoneurons under trans-spinal direct current stimulation. The protocol describes how to measure membrane properties and record the rhythmic firing of motoneurons before, during, and after anodal or cathodal polarization of the spinal cord.
