Wakefulness Induction Analysis

Wakefulness induction analysis is the study of how the brain transitions from sleep or reduced arousal into an alert, responsive state. This process depends on coordinated activation of the ascending arousal system, including brainstem cholinergic and monoaminergic pathways, hypothalamic orexin signaling, and thalamocortical networks that promote cortical activation. In neuroscience, analyzing these mechanisms helps researchers distinguish normal arousal from pathological states and evaluate responses to sensory stimulation, pharmacological agents, anesthesia, or sleep disruption. The findings inform research on insomnia, hypersomnia, coma, narcolepsy, and clinical strategies for regulating attention and consciousness.

Sleep-Wake Cycles

2024

Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. While it may seem passive, sleep consists of distinct cycles, each with its unique characteristics and functions. Two key sleep phases are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). NREM Sleep NREM sleep comprises four progressive stages that seamlessly merge: Stage 1 is the...

(2019)This video demonstrates the optogenetic manipulation of neural circuits involved in the sleep-to-wakefulness transition in mice. The procedure involves surgically implanting an optic fiber and electrodes into the brain and muscles to enable light stimulation and electrophysiological recording. By delivering light to activate light-sensitive cation...

We present a protocol used to discover an interactive effect between sleep and cortisol on memory consolidation, particularly for negative arousing images. Specifically, the experimental design utilizes eye tracking, salivary cortisol analysis, and behavioral memory testing – methods that can be used with both healthy and clinical participants.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...
