Patterned Neuronal Networks

Patterned neuronal networks are organized assemblies of neurons whose spatial arrangement and connectivity are controlled to produce reproducible activity, making them useful systems for studying how structure shapes function. Their behavior emerges from interactions among neuronal excitability, synaptic signaling, network connectivity, and physical constraints such as geometry or substrate patterning, which can guide neurite growth and establish defined circuits. In physics, these networks provide experimental models for collective dynamics, signal propagation, synchronization, and emergent behavior in complex systems. They also support research on neural computation, brain development, disease mechanisms, and the design of biohybrid devices that couple living cells with engineered materials.
