Hunger Cry

A hunger cry is an infant’s vocal signal of a need for nourishment, making it an important behavior in the study of early communication and caregiver–infant relationships. As hunger develops, internal physiological states and feeding-related cues can increase infant arousal, leading to crying that prompts caregivers to offer food and evaluate the infant’s needs. In psychology, examining hunger cries helps researchers distinguish biological drives from other sources of distress, such as discomfort or fatigue, while studying how caregivers interpret and respond to infant signals. This work informs research on attachment, responsive caregiving, feeding behavior, and early social development.

Primary Motives: Hunger and Thirst

2025

Hunger and thirst are fundamental physiological drives crucial for maintaining homeostasis and ensuring the survival of both humans and animals. These drives are regulated through complex interactions between the brain, hormones, and sensory receptors. Hunger arises when the brain detects changes in the body's nutrient levels, including glucose, lipids, amino acids, and hormones such as ghrelin and leptin. The hypothalamus plays a central role in hunger regulation. The lateral hypothalamus acts...

Carbon fluxes in the cryosphere are hardly assessed yet but are crucial regarding climate change. Here we show a novel prototype device that captures the phototrophic potential in supraglacial environments based on laser-induced fluorescence emission (L.I.F.E.) technology offering high spectral and spatial resolution data under in situ conditions.

Imaging Neuronal Responses in Slice Preparations of Vomeronasal Organ Expressing a Genetically Encoded Calcium Sensor

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) detects intraspecies chemical signals that convey social and reproductive information. We have performed Ca2+ imaging experiments using transgenic mice expressing G-CaMP2 in VNO tissue. This approach allows us to analyze the complicated response patterns of the vomeronasal neurons to large numbers of pheromone stimuli.

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.
