Question 1

What are the main types of glial cells in the central nervous system?

Accepted Answer

The central nervous system contains four main glial cell types. Astrocytes are the largest and most abundant, maintaining the blood-brain barrier and regulating metabolic processes. Oligodendrocytes form myelin sheaths around axons to speed signal transmission. Microglia are the smallest cells, specializing in phagocytosis of pathogens and debris. Ependymal cells line the ventricles and produce cerebrospinal fluid.

Question 2

How do glial cells in the peripheral nervous system differ from those in the CNS?

Accepted Answer

The peripheral nervous system contains satellite cells and Schwann cells that perform functions similar to CNS glia. Satellite cells provide structure and nutrients to neuron bodies, functioning like astrocytes. Schwann cells form myelin sheaths around peripheral axons, similar to oligodendrocytes. Both cell types ensure proper insulation and conductivity for electrical signal transmission in the peripheral nervous system.

Question 3

What role do astrocytes play in brain function?

Accepted Answer

Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells and perform multiple critical functions. They maintain the blood-brain barrier, regulate blood flow, and manage metabolic processes. Astrocytes also control synaptic ion and pH homeostasis, creating optimal conditions for neuronal communication. Their extensive contact with neurons and capillaries makes them essential for overall brain health and function.

Question 4

How do oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells contribute to nerve signal speed?

Accepted Answer

Both oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells form myelin sheaths that wrap around axons multiple times, creating an insulating coating. This myelin sheath is essential for proper conduction of neuronal signaling and greatly increases the speed at which electrical messages travel along nerves. Oligodendrocytes perform this function in the central nervous system, while Schwann cells do so in the peripheral nervous system.

Question 5

What is the immune function of microglia in the central nervous system?

Accepted Answer

Microglia are the macrophages of the central nervous system, serving as immune defenders. These smallest glial cells specialize in phagocytosis, engulfing pathogens and cellular debris to protect the CNS from infectious agents and toxins. Microglia also prune unnecessary synapses during development, contributing to proper neural circuit formation and refinement.

Question 6

Why are glial cells important for nervous system development and health?

Accepted Answer

Glial cells provide critical scaffolding during embryonic development, allowing neurons to migrate and extend axons properly. Throughout life, they maintain homeostatic conditions and support routine brain function. When glial cells are defective, severe neurological conditions can result, including developmental disorders, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, demonstrating their essential role in nervous system health.

Question 7

How do ependymal cells contribute to brain protection?

Accepted Answer

Ependymal cells are cube-shaped cells with cilia-like protrusions that line the brain's ventricles. They produce cerebrospinal fluid and form a barrier between the brain and this fluid, filtering out potentially harmful substances. Like astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells originate from radial glia, ensuring coordinated development and function of the central nervous system.
