Question 1

What happens during the filtration stage in the renal corpuscle?

Accepted Answer

In the renal corpuscle, blood pressure forces water and most solutes from the capillaries in the glomerulus into the surrounding Bowman's capsule. This initial filtration removes glucose, bicarbonates, amino acids, and other small molecules while retaining large proteins and blood cells. The kidneys filter nearly 180 liters of blood daily through this process.

Question 2

How does the proximal convoluted tubule recover useful substances from filtrate?

Accepted Answer

The proximal convoluted tubule reabsorbs approximately 70% of filtered solutes back into surrounding capillaries based on blood chemistry needs. Glucose, bicarbonates, and amino acids are selectively reabsorbed, while waste products remain in the filtrate. This selective reabsorption ensures essential nutrients return to circulation.

Question 3

What role does the loop of Henle play in water and ion reabsorption?

Accepted Answer

As filtrate descends the loop of Henle, water is reabsorbed into the blood through aquaporin channels, increasing blood volume and pressure. On the ascending journey, sodium and chloride ions are also reabsorbed. This segment is critical for concentrating urine and maintaining proper osmotic balance.

Question 4

What waste products are removed in the distal convoluted tubule?

Accepted Answer

The distal convoluted tubule secretes nitrogenous waste products like creatinine and urea from the blood into the filtrate. Potassium, ammonium, and hydrogen ions are also removed to adjust blood pH and electrolyte content. This secretion step ensures toxic metabolic byproducts are eliminated from circulation.

Question 5

How do hormones regulate water and electrolyte reabsorption during urine formation?

Accepted Answer

Circulating blood hormones involved in osmoregulation induce reabsorption of sodium, calcium, or additional water as needed to increase or decrease blood pressure and regulate electrolytes. These hormonal signals adjust the permeability of tubule cells, allowing fine-tuned control of water and ion balance. This hormonal regulation ensures blood osmolarity remains stable.

Question 6

What happens to filtrate in the collecting tubule before excretion?

Accepted Answer

The collecting tubule makes final solute and water adjustments to the filtrate, which is now purified as urine. The urine then moves to the renal pelvis for pooling before traveling through the ureter to the bladder for excretion. This final segment allows precise regulation of urine concentration.

Question 7

How do hibernating animals reduce kidney function during dormancy?

Accepted Answer

In hibernating animals like bears and ground squirrels, renal vessels constrict and prevent blood flow into the glomerulus, halting kidney function entirely. This adaptation conserves water during hibernation when no food or water is ingested. Kidney function resumes when the animal emerges from its hypothermic state.
