Question 1

What is structural isomerism in coordination compounds?

Accepted Answer

Structural isomerism occurs when coordination compounds have the same molecular formula but different connectivities of atoms to the central metal atom. This results in distinct physical and chemical properties despite identical composition. Structural isomerism divides into two categories: coordination-sphere isomers and linkage isomers, each arising from different rearrangements within the complex.

Question 2

How do coordination-sphere isomers form?

Accepted Answer

Coordination-sphere isomers occur when an anionic ligand in the coordination sphere exchanges places with a counterion from the outer lattice. The coordination number remains constant, but the composition of the coordination sphere changes. For example, pentaamminebromocobalt(II) chloride and pentaamminechlorocobalt(II) bromide are coordination-sphere isomers that generate different ions when dissolved in water.

Question 3

What causes linkage isomerism in coordination complexes?

Accepted Answer

Linkage isomerism occurs when a monodentate ligand with multiple donor atoms can coordinate to the metal through different atoms. The nitrite ion, for instance, has lone pairs on both nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Depending on which atom bonds to the metal, the ligand is named differently, creating distinct isomers with different colors and properties.

Question 4

What are nitro and nitrito ligands?

Accepted Answer

Nitro and nitrito ligands are linkage isomers of the nitrite ion. When the nitrite ion coordinates through nitrogen's lone pair, it forms the nitro ligand. When oxygen's lone pair coordinates instead, it forms the nitrito ligand. Pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) appears yellow, while pentaamminenitritocobalt(III) appears orange, demonstrating how linkage isomerism affects compound properties.

Question 5

Why do isomers have different chemical properties?

Accepted Answer

Isomers have different chemical properties because their atomic connectivities differ, altering how atoms interact and bond. In coordination-sphere isomers, different ligands occupy the coordination sphere, changing which ions are released in solution. These structural differences fundamentally affect reactivity, solubility, and other chemical behaviors despite maintaining the same molecular formula.

Question 6

Which ligands are capable of linkage isomerism?

Accepted Answer

Ligands capable of linkage isomerism are monodentate ligands with more than one potential donor atom. Examples include the nitrite ion (NO2−), cyanide ion (CN−), and thiocyanate ion (SCN−). Each can bind to the metal center through different atoms, producing distinct isomers with different names and properties based on which donor atom coordinates.

Question 7

How does the coordination number change in structural isomerism?

Accepted Answer

In coordination-sphere isomerism, the coordination number of the metal ion remains constant while ligands and counterions exchange positions. In linkage isomerism, the coordination number also stays the same because the ligand still occupies one coordination site, regardless of which donor atom bonds to the metal. Both types preserve the metal's coordination number while altering compound composition.
