Question 1

What are the main types of preventive healthcare services?

Accepted Answer

Preventive healthcare services include adult screening for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes; cancer screenings like colonoscopies and mammograms; counseling on nutrition, mental health, and tobacco and alcohol use; immunization and vaccination programs; regular screening of pregnant women; and pediatric screenings for hearing, vision, and developmental disorders. These services detect illness early or prevent disease before it develops.

Question 2

How do the four levels of prevention differ in their approach?

Accepted Answer

Primordial prevention identifies future health hazards and controls risk factors through population strategies like promoting healthy lifestyles. Primary prevention reduces chronic illness risk through individual behavior changes such as smoking cessation. Secondary prevention detects and treats pre-clinical abnormalities using screening techniques. Tertiary prevention reverses, halts, or postpones existing disease through clinical interventions like chemotherapy or surgery.

Question 3

What is the purpose of primary prevention in healthcare?

Accepted Answer

Primary prevention reduces the development of chronic illness by lowering individual risk factors through lifestyle modifications and vaccinations. Examples include adopting a good diet and quitting smoking to reduce cardiovascular risk, or receiving influenza and pneumonia vaccines to prevent severe disease. Some strategies are active and require individual engagement, while others are passive.

Question 4

How does secondary prevention identify disease early?

Accepted Answer

Secondary prevention uses screening techniques to detect and treat pre-clinical abnormalities before symptoms appear, enabling earlier and more cost-effective treatment. This collaborative process involves both the individual and healthcare professionals, with emphasis on patient participation. Screening helps identify conditions like high cholesterol in patients experiencing sudden weight gain.

Question 5

What role does tertiary prevention play in managing existing disease?

Accepted Answer

Tertiary prevention focuses exclusively on clinical interventions to reverse, halt, or postpone existing disease and decrease its burden on the patient's life. Patients have greater contact with the healthcare system and care providers across various roles and settings. Examples include undergoing colectomy to prevent colon cancer spread or receiving chemotherapy for cancer management.

Question 6

Why is primordial prevention considered a population health strategy?

Accepted Answer

Primordial prevention addresses broad determinants of health rather than individual risk factor exposure, making it a population-level strategy. It involves efforts to avoid future health hazards and reduce known risk variables before disease develops. Examples include improving sanitation systems and promoting healthy lifestyles in children to prevent obesity and related chronic conditions.

Question 7

How do preventive healthcare services benefit overall workforce productivity?

Accepted Answer

Preventive healthcare services keep individuals healthy and productive through regular check-ups, screening, and counseling, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. By preventing or detecting illness early, these services reduce disease burden and maintain quality of life. This approach emphasizes health maintenance rather than treating acute or chronic illness after it develops.
