Question 1

How does oxygen move from the lungs into the bloodstream during respiration?

Accepted Answer

During external respiration, oxygen diffuses from the lungs' alveoli into blood in the pulmonary capillaries. This occurs because the partial pressure of oxygen is high in the alveoli and low in the pulmonary capillaries. Gas molecules move from areas of higher partial pressure to lower partial pressure, allowing oxygen to enter the bloodstream for distribution throughout the body.

Question 2

What is partial pressure and why does it matter in gas exchange?

Accepted Answer

Partial pressure is the independent force exerted by each distinct gas in a mixture of gases. The greater the partial pressure, the more gas dissolves into a liquid. During respiration, gas molecules move from areas of higher partial pressure to lower partial pressure, enabling oxygen to enter blood and carbon dioxide to exit, maintaining efficient gaseous exchange.

Question 3

What happens to carbon dioxide during external respiration?

Accepted Answer

During external respiration, carbon dioxide diffuses across the respiratory membranes from the blood into the alveolar air. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide is high in the pulmonary capillaries and low in the alveoli, creating the pressure gradient necessary for carbon dioxide to move out of the blood and be exhaled from the lungs.

Question 4

How does internal respiration differ from external respiration?

Accepted Answer

External respiration occurs between the lungs and blood, while internal respiration occurs between the blood and body tissues. During internal respiration, oxygen moves out of the blood into tissues, and carbon dioxide diffuses from tissues into the blood. The partial pressure of oxygen is low and carbon dioxide is high in tissues, driving this exchange.

Question 5

How does hemoglobin contribute to oxygen transport in the body?

Accepted Answer

Most oxygen is bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells, forming oxyhemoglobin, due to hemoglobin's high affinity for oxygen. While a small amount of oxygen dissolves in plasma, hemoglobin's oxygen-binding capacity enables efficient transport of oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body.

Question 6

What role does surfactant play in gas exchange within the alveoli?

Accepted Answer

Surfactant is a fluid lining the alveoli that reduces surface tension, preventing the alveoli from collapsing. Produced by alveolar cells, surfactant maintains the structural integrity of the alveoli, facilitating the exchange of gases between the air and blood. Without surfactant, efficient gaseous exchange would be compromised.

Question 7

How can conditions like anemia or hemorrhage affect oxygen delivery to tissues?

Accepted Answer

Hemorrhage decreases cardiac output and reduces blood available for oxygen delivery, potentially leading to tissue hypoxia. Anemia reduces erythrocytes, decreasing hemoglobin available for oxygen transport and causing inadequate tissue oxygenation. Both conditions compromise the body's ability to maintain efficient gaseous exchange and oxygen delivery.
