Question 1

Why is arc length used instead of projected length when analyzing cables under their own weight?

Accepted Answer

A generalized loading function acting along the cable's arc length provides a more accurate representation of how weight distributes on the cable. Using projected length would misrepresent the actual force distribution, since the cable's weight acts continuously along its curved path, not along a horizontal projection. This distinction is critical for correctly determining cable sag and tension in overhead power transmission lines.

Question 2

What do the first and second equilibrium equations represent when analyzing a cable segment?

Accepted Answer

The first equilibrium equation represents the horizontal component of tensile force acting on the cable segment, while the second represents the vertical component. These two equations, derived from applying equilibrium conditions to a free-body diagram of the segment, form the foundation for analyzing how tension varies along the cable's length under its own weight.

Question 3

How does Pythagoras' theorem connect vertical distance and arc length in cable analysis?

Accepted Answer

Pythagoras' theorem establishes a mathematical relationship between the change in vertical distance (dy) and the arc length of the cable (ds). This relationship is substituted into the third equilibrium equation to account for the cable's curved geometry. The resulting expression, after rearrangement and integration, yields the cable's shape and allows engineers to calculate sag and tension.

Question 4

What is the purpose of drawing a free-body diagram when analyzing a cable segment?

Accepted Answer

A free-body diagram visualizes all forces acting on a cable segment, providing a clear basis for applying equilibrium equations. By isolating the segment and showing tension components and weight distribution, the diagram enables systematic analysis of internal forces. This approach is essential for deriving the mathematical expressions that determine cable shape and stability.

Question 5

How does integration help determine the shape of a cable subjected to its own weight?

Accepted Answer

After applying equilibrium equations and substituting the Pythagoras relationship, the resulting differential equation is rearranged and integrated to obtain an explicit expression for cable shape. Integration transforms the local force relationships into a global description of how the cable curves under its weight. This mathematical process enables engineers to predict sag and tension distribution throughout overhead power transmission lines.

Question 6

Why is understanding cable sag and tension important for overhead power transmission lines?

Accepted Answer

Cable sag and tension directly affect the stability and functionality of overhead power transmission lines. Excessive sag can cause cables to contact obstacles or other lines, while insufficient tension may lead to failure. Accurate analysis using the cable's weight ensures proper design clearances, material selection, and support spacing, maintaining safe and efficient electricity distribution across large distances.

Question 7

What three equations result from applying equilibrium conditions to a cable segment?

Accepted Answer

Applying equilibrium equations to a cable segment yields three equations: the first represents horizontal force balance, the second represents vertical force balance, and the third incorporates the relationship between vertical distance change and arc length. These three equations form a system that, when solved through substitution and integration, produces the mathematical expression describing the cable's shape under its own weight.
