Question 1

What are the three main subdivisions of systemic circulation?

Accepted Answer

The three main subdivisions are coronary, cerebral, and hepatic portal circulation. Coronary circulation supplies oxygenated blood to the heart muscle. Cerebral circulation delivers blood to the brain, while hepatic portal circulation extends from the gastrointestinal tract to the liver, ensuring nutrient processing and metabolic balance throughout the body.

Question 2

Where do all systemic arteries originate and what do they transport?

Accepted Answer

All systemic arteries originate from the aorta, forming numerous branches that carry oxygenated blood to different body parts. These arteries, including bronchial arteries that supply the lungs, distribute oxygen and nutrients throughout the body's tissues and organs, maintaining cellular function and metabolism.

Question 3

How does deoxygenated blood return to the heart from the body?

Accepted Answer

Deoxygenated blood returns through an equally complex network of veins. Based on the region they drain, veins join the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, or the coronary sinus before draining into the heart. This completes the circulation cycle and prepares blood for reoxygenation in the lungs.

Question 4

What is the role of the coronary sinus in heart circulation?

Accepted Answer

The coronary sinus is a large vein on the heart's posterior side that collects deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle and channels it into the right atrium. This ensures the heart receives adequate oxygen and nutrients to function effectively and maintain systemic circulation throughout the body.

Question 5

Why is cerebral circulation critical for brain function?

Accepted Answer

Cerebral circulation involves blood movement through the brain's network of vessels, delivering consistent oxygen and nutrients via cerebral arteries. Disruptions to this flow can cause severe neurological conditions like stroke, making adequate blood supply essential for proper brain function and neurological health.

Question 6

What distinguishes pulmonary circulation from systemic circulation?

Accepted Answer

Pulmonary circulation transports deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and back, whereas systemic circulation typically carries oxygenated blood away from the heart. This process oxygenates blood and removes carbon dioxide, contrasting with systemic circulation's role in delivering oxygen to body tissues.

Question 7

How does the liver receive and process blood in systemic circulation?

Accepted Answer

The liver receives nutrient-rich blood from digestive organs via the hepatic portal vein and oxygenated blood from the hepatic artery. The liver processes these nutrients and metabolic products, then hepatic veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart, maintaining metabolic balance and homeostasis.
