Question 1

What are the three main arteries that supply blood to the digestive system?

Accepted Answer

The splanchnic circulation relies on three main arteries: the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, and inferior mesenteric artery. These arteries branch from the abdominal aorta and deliver oxygenated blood to different regions of the gastrointestinal tract. The celiac trunk supplies the esophagus, stomach, liver, duodenum, and pancreas, while the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries supply the small and large intestines.

Question 2

Which organs does the celiac trunk supply?

Accepted Answer

The celiac trunk branches into three arteries: the left gastric, splenic, and common hepatic arteries. These branches deliver blood to the esophagus, stomach, liver, duodenum, and pancreas. The left gastric artery supplies the lesser curvature of the stomach, the splenic artery serves the spleen and pancreatic branches, and the common hepatic artery supplies the liver and first part of the duodenum.

Question 3

What regions of the intestines does the superior mesenteric artery supply?

Accepted Answer

The superior mesenteric artery supplies the small intestine, cecum, ascending colon, and part of the transverse colon. Its branches form an extensive network within the small intestine, ensuring optimal nutrient absorption and oxygen delivery during mechanical and chemical digestion in the small intestine.

Question 4

How does the hepatic portal system process nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs?

Accepted Answer

The hepatic portal system collects nutrient-rich blood from splanchnic veins and transports it to the liver for filtration and detoxification before the blood returns to the heart via the inferior vena cava. This system ensures that absorbed nutrients from the small intestine, where most absorption occurs, are processed or stored by the liver before circulating throughout the body.

Question 5

What are the two primary functions of blood vessels serving the digestive system?

Accepted Answer

Blood vessels in the digestive system have two key functions. First, they transport protein and carbohydrate nutrients absorbed by mucosal cells after food digestion, while lipids are absorbed via lacteals of the lymphatic system. Second, they supply the gastrointestinal organs with oxygen and nutrients needed to drive their cellular processes and support digestion.

Question 6

How much of the heart's output goes to the digestive system during rest and digestion?

Accepted Answer

During rest and digestion, approximately one-fourth of the blood pumped with each heartbeat enters arteries serving the intestines. This demonstrates how metabolically demanding the digestive process is on the cardiovascular system, requiring substantial blood flow to support nutrient absorption and organ function.

Question 7

Which veins drain blood from different regions of the stomach and esophagus?

Accepted Answer

The right gastric vein drains blood from parts of the esophagus, duodenum, and areas of the stomach, while the left gastric vein drains blood from the esophagus, stomach, and pancreas. The splenic and inferior mesenteric veins drain blood from the fundus, areas of the stomach, pancreas, and distal large intestine, contributing to the hepatic portal system.
