תורשתיות מודדת את ההשפעה הגנטית על תכונות או מאפיינים פיזיים כגון גובה או צבע עיניים.

תורשתיות יכולה להשתנות בהתאם לקבוצה ולתנאים שבהם הם חיים.

לדוגמה, גובה האדם הוא 90% תורשתי, אבל חומרים מזינים ופעילות גופנית משפיעים עליו באופן משמעותי.

כאשר כולם בקבוצה, כמו כל הילדים במשפחה זו, חיים בסביבה דומה, הבדלים בתכונות שלהם, כמו גובה או אישיות, נוטים יותר לנבוע מהגורמים הגנטיים שלהם.

לעומת זאת, אם אחד הילדים פעיל יותר מבחינה גופנית ובעל תזונה בריאה יותר, ההבדלים בין המאפיינים הפיזיים של האחים עשויים לנבוע מגורמים סביבתיים ולא גנטיים.

נתונים היסטוריים על תכונות פיזיות ממחישים עוד יותר את השפעת הסביבה. לדוגמה, הגובה הממוצע העולמי של גברים ונשים כאחד עלה בכ-10 ס"מ במהלך 100 השנים האחרונות, מה שמשקף שיפור בתזונה ובבריאות.
