פרויד ראה בחלומות חלון אל הלא מודע, החושף תשוקות ופחדים נסתרים. הוא הציג שני מושגי מפתח להבנת חלומות – תוכן גלוי ותוכן סמוי.

התוכן הגלוי של חלום הוא התוכן הממשי שלו, כמו לחלום על טיפוס מוצלח על צוק.

לעומת זאת, התוכן הסמוי נושא משמעויות עמוקות וסמליות יותר. לדוגמה, חלום על טיפוס על צוק עשוי לסמל הישגים אישיים, כמו קידום בעבודה.

לעומת זאת, תיאוריות עכשוויות, כמו התיאוריה הקוגניטיבית של החלימה, מציעות כי חלומות הם סימולציות מנטליות הדומות לחשיבה בשעות היום, ומשמשות כהמשך של מחשבותינו בזמן ערות ושינה.

לדוגמה, חלימה על מקום עבודה עשויה שלא לרמוז על משמעויות נסתרות, כמו לחץ בעבודה, אלא משקפת מחשבות יומיומיות על משימות, תאריכי יעד או אינטראקציות עם עמיתים.

בנוסף, תיאוריית ההפעלה-סינתזה מציעה שחלומות נובעים מניסיונו של המוח להבין פעילויות עצביות אקראיות במהלך השינה.

לדוגמה, חלום נפוץ של נפילה יכול להתפרש על ידי תיאוריה זו כירי אקראי של נוירונים על ידי המוח, אשר המוח מפרש כאובדן שיווי משקל או תמיכה פיזית במהלך השינה ולא כפחד תת מודע מכישלון או אובדן.
