Question 1

What is the law of effect and how does it explain learning?

Accepted Answer

The law of effect, proposed by Edward Thorndike, states that behaviors followed by satisfying outcomes are strengthened and more likely to repeat, while those followed by unsatisfying outcomes are weakened. For example, a child praised for doing homework continues the behavior, whereas a child scolded for drawing on walls is less likely to repeat it. This principle demonstrates how consequences directly shape learning and behavior patterns.

Question 2

How did Thorndike's puzzle box experiment demonstrate the law of effect?

Accepted Answer

Thorndike placed a hungry cat in a box with fish outside. Initially, the cat made many random movements like scratching and meowing. Eventually, it accidentally stepped on a lever that opened the door, allowing it to escape and reach the food. On subsequent trials, the cat made fewer random movements and quickly learned to press the lever, showing how satisfying consequences strengthen behavior.

Question 3

How did B.F. Skinner build on Thorndike's law of effect?

Accepted Answer

B.F. Skinner developed operant conditioning theory, which emphasizes how consequences shape behavior through reinforcement and punishment. While Thorndike observed learning in puzzle boxes, Skinner created the Skinner box to systematically study how rats learn that pressing a lever results in food rewards. Skinner's controlled apparatus allowed precise measurement of how consequences influence behavior modification.

Question 4

What is the Skinner box and why was it important for studying behavior?

Accepted Answer

The Skinner box is an apparatus designed to study operant conditioning under controlled conditions. Skinner soundproofed the box and used mechanical recording devices to log responses and automate food delivery, eliminating human error. This innovation allowed precise study of how reinforcement and punishment shape behavior, influencing applications in education, therapy, and animal training through systematic reinforcement strategies.

Question 5

How do satisfying and unsatisfying outcomes affect behavior differently?

Accepted Answer

Satisfying outcomes, such as obtaining food or receiving praise, strengthen behaviors and increase their likelihood of recurrence. Unsatisfying outcomes, such as scolding or punishment, weaken behaviors and decrease their likelihood. This differential effect of consequences is central to the law of effect and explains why organisms repeat rewarded actions while avoiding punished ones.

Question 6

What role do consequences play in shaping animal and human behavior?

Accepted Answer

Consequences directly influence whether behaviors are repeated or avoided. According to the law of effect, behaviors followed by positive consequences are reinforced and become more frequent, while those followed by negative consequences are suppressed. This principle applies to both animals, as demonstrated in Thorndike's cat experiments, and humans, such as children learning through praise or punishment in educational settings.

Question 7

How does the law of effect relate to real-world learning situations?

Accepted Answer

The law of effect explains everyday learning through consequences. When students receive good grades for studying, they study more; when they face detention for misbehavior, they misbehave less. Parents use this principle when rewarding chores or removing privileges for rule-breaking. Understanding how satisfying and unsatisfying outcomes shape behavior helps educators and parents design effective learning environments and reinforce desired actions.
