Question 1

What are the three types of traits in Allport's trait theory?

Accepted Answer

Allport categorized traits into cardinal, central, and secondary types. Cardinal traits are rare and dominate a person's entire personality, like Mother Teresa's altruism. Central traits are common core qualities used to describe someone, such as sociability or honesty. Secondary traits are less prominent, situation-specific characteristics reflecting preferences and attitudes, like preferring to sleep on a particular side of the bed.

Question 2

How did Gordon Allport approach personality psychology differently from psychoanalysis?

Accepted Answer

Allport emphasized understanding people in their present lives rather than focusing on their past, contrasting with psychoanalytic approaches. He believed personality should be studied in healthy, well-adjusted individuals rather than those with psychological problems. This approach prioritized understanding normal personality functioning and individual uniqueness over exploring unconscious conflicts or developmental history.

Question 3

What is the lexical approach to personality traits that Allport developed?

Accepted Answer

The lexical approach assumes that language's most significant traits are embedded in how people naturally describe each other using trait terms. Allport and H.S. Odbert analyzed thousands of dictionary words describing personality traits, narrowing the list to 4,500 traits. This work led to the development of factor analysis technique, helping researchers identify which traits tend to cluster together.

Question 4

Why does Allport believe traits remain consistent across different situations?

Accepted Answer

According to Allport, traits are relatively stable characteristics that guide behavior consistently across various contexts. For example, a sociable person behaves as outgoing both at a party and during a group discussion. Traits function as enduring mental structures that shape a person's reactions regardless of the situation, making personality predictable and stable.

Question 5

What makes cardinal traits different from central traits in Allport's theory?

Accepted Answer

Cardinal traits are dominant and rare characteristics that define a person's entire personality, with only a few individuals having personalities dominated by a single trait. Central traits are core qualities less dominant than cardinal traits, commonly used to describe someone. While cardinal traits are exceptional and all-encompassing, central traits form the basic foundation of most people's personalities.

Question 6

How did Allport's emphasis on individuality influence personality psychology?

Accepted Answer

Allport believed each individual possesses a distinct combination of traits, emphasizing uniqueness in personality study. His focus on identifying traits as core units for understanding personality and his work on the lexical approach contributed significantly to modern personality psychology. His emphasis on individuality and the present remains influential in understanding personality today.

Question 7

What role do secondary traits play in shaping behavior according to Allport?

Accepted Answer

Secondary traits are more variable and situation-specific, exerting less influence over behavior than cardinal or central traits. They reflect specific preferences and attitudes that can change depending on the environment. Unlike central traits that consistently define personality, secondary traits are less stable and more responsive to contextual factors.
