Question 1

What defines abnormal behavior in psychology?

Accepted Answer

Abnormal behavior is a mental illness rooted in the brain that affects how individuals think, behave, and interact with others. A behavior is classified as abnormal when it persists over an extended period and is deviant, maladaptive, or personally distressful. Psychologists assess these three criteria to determine whether behavior warrants clinical attention and intervention.

Question 2

How does deviant behavior differ from normal behavior?

Accepted Answer

Deviant behavior is atypical or statistically unusual and often violates cultural norms. For example, someone checking door locks every few minutes throughout the day deviates significantly from typical social behavior. Such actions diverge from societal expectations and statistical averages, marking them as abnormal within a cultural context.

Question 3

What are examples of maladaptive behavior?

Accepted Answer

Maladaptive behavior impairs an individual's ability to adapt to everyday demands and disrupts normal functioning. A person who avoids stepping on pavement cracks to prevent imagined misfortune may take roundabout paths, causing delays and stress. Such behaviors interfere with reaching work or social events on time, reducing overall quality of life and daily effectiveness.

Question 4

What is personally distressful behavior?

Accepted Answer

Personally distressful behavior causes prolonged emotional distress and internal struggle beyond occasional discomfort. For instance, someone who severely restricts food intake due to extreme body image concerns experiences persistent anxiety and self-criticism. This ongoing emotional suffering reflects a significant departure from healthy psychological functioning.

Question 5

How do brain changes relate to abnormal behavior?

Accepted Answer

Abnormal behavior results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. These neurological changes underlie the mental illness and affect how individuals process information and respond to their environment. Understanding brain dysfunction is central to recognizing and diagnosing psychological disorders.

Question 6

Why is duration important when identifying abnormal behavior?

Accepted Answer

Duration is critical because abnormal behavior must persist over an extended period to warrant clinical classification. A single instance of unusual behavior does not constitute a disorder; the behavior must be consistent and ongoing. This persistence distinguishes genuine psychological disorders from temporary reactions or isolated incidents.

Question 7

What role do cultural norms play in defining abnormal behavior?

Accepted Answer

Cultural norms significantly influence how deviant behavior is identified and classified. Behaviors considered abnormal in one culture may be acceptable in another, as deviance is defined relative to societal expectations. Understanding cultural context is essential for accurately assessing whether behavior truly represents a psychological disorder or simply reflects cultural differences.
