Diffusion Exchange

Diffusion exchange is the movement of molecules between compartments or molecular environments through random thermal motion, often driven by differences in concentration or chemical potential. In biochemistry, solutes cross membranes, pores, or other boundaries when permeability permits, and the rate of exchange depends on factors such as molecular size, temperature, barrier properties, and the concentration gradient. Studying diffusion exchange helps characterize membrane transport, molecular mobility, and compartmental organization in biological systems, while exchange-based measurements can reveal how rapidly molecules move between distinct chemical environments. These principles support research on cellular transport, protein interactions, and biochemical reaction environments.

Gas Exchange and Transport

2019

Gas exchange, the intake of molecular oxygen (O2) from the environment and the outflow of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the environment, is necessary for cellular function. Gas exchange during respiration occurs largely via the movement of gas molecules along pressure gradients. Gas travels from areas of higher partial pressure to areas of lower partial pressure. In mammals, gas exchange occurs in the alveoli of the lungs, which are adjacent to capillaries and share a membrane with them. When the...

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.

Social Exchange Theory

We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003). People are motivated to maximize the benefits...

Dialysis: Diffusion Based Separation

2023

Dialysis is a common technique used in biochemistry for separating molecules based on diffusion. In this procedure, a semipermeable membrane allows the movement of certain molecules based on size. This method can be applied to the removal of buffer, known as desalting, or exchanging buffer molecules or ions from a protein solution. This video covers the principles of dialysis along with a general procedure. Several applications of dialysis are reviewed, including the removal of gradient...
