Transverse Relaxation Spectroscopy

Transverse Relaxation Spectroscopy is a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approach that characterizes how rapidly transverse magnetization decays, providing information about molecular motion and local environments. After radiofrequency excitation, spins lose phase coherence through spin-spin interactions, and the resulting signal decay is described by the transverse relaxation time, T2. In biochemistry, measuring T2 across resonance signals helps assess protein flexibility, conformational exchange, ligand binding, macromolecular interactions, and aggregation. These measurements connect NMR observables with molecular dynamics, supporting studies of structure-function relationships and the behavior of biomolecules in solution.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

Source: Joshua Wofford, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Mössbauer spectroscopy is a bulk characterization technique that examines the nuclear excitation of an atom by gamma rays in the solid state. The resulting Mössbauer spectrum provides information about the oxidation state, spin state, and electronic environment around the target atom, which, in combination, gives evidence about the electronic structure and ligand arrangement (geometry) of the molecule.

Minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (MTAC) conserves the essentials of regular transverse aortic constriction (TAC) while eliminating the use of a ventilator with tracheal intubation. It proves to be a highly desirable method for high-throughput studies on left ventricular overload, particularly in translational studies.

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles

The period of muscle contraction primarily influences the duration of stimulation at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the presence of free calcium ions in the sarcoplasm, and the availability of energy or ATP to support contractions. When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open.

Speed of a Transverse Wave

The speed of a wave depends on the characteristics of the medium. For example, in the case of a guitar, the strings vibrate to produce the sound. The speed of the waves on the strings and the wavelength determine the frequency of the sound produced. The strings on a guitar have different thicknesses but may be made of similar material. They have different linear densities, and the linear density is defined as the mass per length. One of the key properties of any wave is the wave speed. Light...
