Construct Fabrication

Construct fabrication is the process of creating engineered biological structures, or constructs, by organizing cells, biomaterials, and supporting architecture for a defined bioengineering purpose. It works by combining materials and living components through methods such as molding, layer-by-layer deposition, or bioprinting, followed by stabilization that preserves the construct’s shape and functional organization. Fabricated constructs can model tissues, support regeneration, or provide platforms for studying cell behavior and testing therapies. By controlling composition, geometry, and mechanical properties, construct fabrication helps researchers develop increasingly biomimetic systems for tissue engineering, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine.

Here, we demonstrate fabrication of collagen-based, tissue constructs containing skeletal myoblasts. These 3-D engineered constructs may be used to replace or repair tissues in vivo. For our purposes, we have designed these as an atrioventricular electrical conduit for the repair of complete heart block[1].

This paper describes the design, construction, and function of a 1,000 m2 facility containing 24 individual 33.6 m2 field plots equipped for measuring total runoff volumes with time and collection of runoff subsamples at selected intervals for quantification of chemical constituents in the runoff water from simulated home lawns.

Using Adhesive Patterning to Construct 3D Paper Microfluidic Devices

We demonstrate the use of patterned aerosol adhesives to construct 3D paper microfluidic devices. This method of adhesive application forms semi-permanent bonds between layers, enabling single-use devices to be non-destructively disassembled after use and to ease folding complex nonplanar structures.

Fabricating Nanogaps by Nanoskiving

The fabrication of electrically addressable, high-aspect-ratio (> 1000:1) metal nanowires separated by gaps of single nanometers using either sacrificial layers of aluminum and silver or self-assembled monolayers as templates is described. These nanogap structures are fabricated without a clean room or any photo- or electron-beam lithographic processes by a form of edge lithography known as nanoskiving.
