Droplet Size Control

Droplet size control is the regulation of liquid droplet dimensions during emulsification or microfluidic processing, a key capability for producing consistent materials and biological systems. In microfluidic devices, droplet diameter depends on factors such as channel geometry, flow rates, fluid viscosity, and interfacial tension; adjusting these conditions controls the balance between continuous-phase shear and dispersed-phase formation. Bioengineers use this principle to generate uniform compartments for cell encapsulation, drug delivery, diagnostics, and high-throughput screening. Precise size control improves reproducibility, transport behavior, and reaction conditions, supporting the development of engineered tissues, biomaterials, and analytical platforms.

We present protocols to be used in the measurement of spray droplet size from agricultural nozzles used in both aerial and ground based agrochemical applications. These methods presented were developed to provide consistent and repeatable droplet size data both inter- and intra-laboratory, when using laser diffraction systems.

Here, we demonstrate a simple production method for size-controllable, monodisperse, water-in-oil (W/O) microdroplets using a capillary-based centrifugal microfluidic device. This method requires only a small sample volume and enables high-yield production. We expect this method will be useful for rapid biochemical and cellular analyses.

The goal of this experiment is to determine and control the size, shape and stability of self-assembled discotic amphiphiles in water. For aqueous based supramolecular polymers such level of control is very difficult. We apply a strategy using both repulsive and attractive interactions. The experimental techniques applied to characterize this system are broadly applicable.

Precipitate Formation and Particle Size Control

In precipitation gravimetry, the precipitating agent should react specifically or selectively with the analyte. While a specific reagent reacts with the analyte alone, a selective reagent can react with a limited number of chemical species. The obtained precipitate should be either a pure substance of known composition or easily converted to one by a simple process, such as ignition or drying. In addition, the precipitate should be insoluble and easily filterable. In general, filterability...
