Cell Exposure Setup

Cell exposure setup is the experimental arrangement used to place cultured cells in controlled contact with a substance, material, surface, or environmental condition so that cellular responses can be measured. It works by defining exposure variables such as cell density, contact time, medium composition, dose, and temperature, then maintaining these conditions while cells interact with the test system and undergo biological changes. In bioengineering, carefully designed exposure setups support evaluation of biomaterial compatibility, drug delivery systems, engineered surfaces, and cytotoxic effects. Standardized conditions improve reproducibility and help researchers connect material properties or treatment parameters with outcomes such as viability, morphology, proliferation, and function.

In this protocol the fabrication, setup and basic operation of a microfluidic picoliter bioreactor (PLBR) for single-cell analysis of prokaryotic microorganisms is introduced. Industrially relevant microorganisms were analyzed as proof of principle allowing insights into growth rate, morphology, and phenotypic heterogeneity over certain time periods, hardly possible with conventional methods.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.
