Immersion Testing

Immersion testing is a laboratory method that evaluates how a material or device changes when placed in a specified liquid for a controlled period. In bioengineering, researchers immerse samples in fluids such as saline, buffer, or simulated body fluid while controlling conditions including temperature, exposure time, and solution composition, then measure changes in mass, appearance, mechanical properties, or chemical composition. The method helps characterize water absorption, swelling, corrosion, dissolution, and degradation in biomaterials. Results support the design and performance assessment of implants, tissue-engineering scaffolds, drug-delivery systems, and other devices intended to function in wet biological environments.

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Sanjay Adhikari; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Objects, vehicles, and organisms immersed in fluid mediums experience forces from the surrounding fluid in the form of buoyancy- a vertical upward force due to fluid weight, drag- a resistive force opposite the direction of motion, and lift- a force perpendicular to the direction of motion. Prediction and characterization of these forces is...

Classical fear conditioning paradigm was adapted for human participants in a fully immersive virtual reality setting. Using a discrimination paradigm, conditioned fear, cue and context memory retention, and extinction was measured with skin conductance response to dynamic virtual snakes and spiders (the conditioned stimuli) in two distinct virtual contexts.

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...
