Uv Light Patterning

UV light patterning is a fabrication method that uses ultraviolet illumination to create defined microscale features in photosensitive materials, making it important for precise control of biomaterial structure. A patterned mask or focused beam selectively exposes a surface, while photoinitiators generate reactive species that crosslink, solidify, or remove material in illuminated regions. In bioengineering, this approach supports the production of patterned hydrogels, microfluidic devices, biosensors, and scaffolds that guide cell attachment, organization, and growth. By linking light exposure to spatially controlled material changes, UV light patterning enables reproducible fabrication of complex architectures for tissue engineering and biomedical research.

A Riboflavin and UV Light Treatment of Platelet Products to Eliminate Bacteria

2025

This video demonstrates the riboflavin and UV light-based pathogen reduction process against high-titer bacterial contamination in human platelet products. This process could help to lower the risk of severe adverse transfusion events associated with bacterial contamination.

Targeted Bacterial Colony Isolation Using Light-Patterned Hydrogel Degradation

Source: Fattahi, N., et al. Photodegradable Hydrogel Interfaces for Bacteria Screening, Selection, and Isolation. J. Vis. Exp. (2021).This video demonstrates the extraction of bacterial colonies from a photodegradable hydrogel using UV light. A specific colony is selected, and a patterned light exposure is designed to initiate localized hydrogel degradation. After adjusting light intensity and duration, the UV light is applied, releasing the colony. The colony is then aspirated through tubing...

The storage conditions of platelet products create an ideal environment for bacterial contaminants to multiply to dangerous levels. The goal of this study was to use a colony forming assay to evaluate a riboflavin based pathogen reduction process against high titer bacterial contamination in human platelet products.

2016

We describe a sequential process for light-mediated formation and subsequent biochemical patterning of synthetic hydrogel matrices for three-dimensional cell culture applications. The construction and modification of hydrogels with cytocompatible photoclick chemistry is demonstrated. Additionally, facile techniques to quantify and observe patterns and determine cell viability within these hydrogels are presented.

Absorbance When light interacts with a substance, a portion of the light is absorbed while the rest is either reflected or transmitted through it. Substances that we perceive as having a color reflect light in the visible range. The color of the substance that we are able to see depends on which wavelength of light is reflected. A substance that we perceive as blue reflects light in the blue range (430 – 480 nm) of the visible spectrum. According to the color wheel, the same substance absorbs...
