Luminescent Plate Reader

A luminescent plate reader is a laboratory instrument that measures light emitted by samples in multiwell plates, enabling sensitive analysis of biological and biochemical reactions. It detects photons produced by luminescent reporters or chemical reactions, such as enzyme-driven assays, and records signal intensity from individual wells under controlled measurement conditions. Researchers use luminescent plate readers to quantify gene expression, ATP and cell viability, enzyme activity, reporter assays, and molecular interactions. Their ability to process many samples efficiently supports screening, assay development, and quantitative experiments in cell biology, microbiology, drug discovery, and other biological techniques.

Introduction to the Microplate Reader

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

2025

In this video, we describe a luminescence-based method to assess the neurotoxicity of neurite outgrowth-promoting small molecule compounds on the viability of hNPC-derived neurons. The assay measures intracellular ATP level, an indicator of cell viability, to evaluate neurotoxicity following test compound treatment.
