Head Fold Formation

Head fold formation is an embryonic morphogenetic process in which the cranial region bends and folds to establish the early three-dimensional organization of the vertebrate body. During cephalocaudal folding, rapid growth of the neural plate and brain causes the head region to curve ventrally, while the cardiogenic area and foregut shift from their initial positions and become enclosed within the embryo. This coordinated movement helps shape the head, establish the primitive forebrain and foregut, and position the developing heart. Studying head fold formation clarifies how tissue movements and differential growth coordinate early body patterning and how disruptions can lead to congenital abnormalities.

Molecular Chaperones and Protein Folding

2020

The native conformation of a protein is formed by interactions between the side chains of its constituent amino acids. When the amino acids cannot form these interactions, the protein cannot fold by itself and needs chaperones. Notably, chaperones do not relay any additional information required for the folding of polypeptides; the native conformation of a protein is determined solely by its amino acid sequence. Chaperones catalyze protein folding without being a part of the folded protein. The...

Proteins are chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Upon synthesis, a protein folds into a three-dimensional conformation which is critical to its biological function. Interactions between its constituent amino acids guide protein folding, and hence the protein structure is primarily dependent on its amino acid sequence.Protein Structure Is Critical to Its Biological FunctionProteins perform a wide range of biological functions such as catalyzing chemical reactions, providing...

2014

A novel vocal fold bioreactor capable of delivering physiologically relevant, vibratory stimulation to cultured cells is constructed and characterized. This dynamic culture device, when combined with a fibrous poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffold, creates a vocal fold-mimetic environment that modulates the behaviors of mesenchymal stem cells.
