Distal Colon Segmentation

Distal colon segmentation is the process of identifying and delineating the distal portion of the large intestine within anatomical images, tissue datasets, or experimental specimens, enabling focused analysis of this clinically important region. It typically combines anatomical landmarks with image features such as tissue boundaries, lumen shape, contrast, and local morphology to separate the distal colon from adjacent structures and quantify regional changes. In cancer research, accurate segmentation supports the localization and measurement of tumors or lesions, comparison of treated and untreated tissue, and reproducible analysis across samples. These data can improve studies of colorectal cancer development, treatment response, and disease-associated tissue remodeling.

In Vitro Recording of Mesenteric Afferent Nerve Activity in Mouse Jejunal and Colonic Segments

Mesenteric afferent nerves convey information from the gastrointestinal tract towards the brain regarding normal homeostasis as well as pathophysiology. Gastrointestinal afferent nerve activity can be assessed by mounting isolated intestinal segments with attached afferent nerves into an organ bath, isolating the nerve, and assessing basal as well as stimulated activity.

Electrophysiological Recording from Colonic Afferent Nerves in an Ex Vivo Rat Colon

This video demonstrates a method to record the activity of colonic afferent nerves in an ex-vivo rat colon, cannulated at both ends and infused with saline to increase intraluminal pressure. As pressure increases, the nerve signal rises, indicating its stimulation.

In this video, we describe a surgical procedure to generate mouse proximal colon loop or pcLoop segment followed by intraluminal injection of fluorescent markers into the segment to study the intestinal epithelial permeability.

Segmental Adeno-Cre Infection: A Technique to Generate Isolated Colorectal Cancer using Genetically Engineered Mouse Models

2023

This video describes the generation of a colorectal mouse model by segmental adeno-cre infection. The infected colon segment leads to tumorigenesis within this segment of the mucosa, resulting in adenomas ultimately progressing to invasive and metastatic carcinoma. This model is an attractive platform for studies of cancer biology and preclinical therapeutic trials.
