Personalized Cancer Model

Personalized cancer models are laboratory systems built from an individual patient’s tumor or tumor-derived cells to represent that person’s disease and support treatment research. Researchers preserve relevant genetic, molecular, and sometimes tissue-level features by growing tumor cells as organoids, maintaining tumor samples, or implanting them into animal hosts; responses to candidate therapies can then be measured under controlled conditions. In cancer research, these models help compare drug sensitivities, investigate mechanisms of resistance, and connect patient-specific biology with treatment selection, while revealing where laboratory responses may not fully predict clinical outcomes.

2023

This video describes the protocol for generating a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft colorectal cancer mouse model to study the progression of colorectal cancer cells in non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency (NOD/SCID) mice. This murine model helps in understanding primary tumor growth and metastases pattern.
