Amphiphilic Compounds

Amphiphilic compounds are molecules that contain both a water-attracting (hydrophilic) region and a water-avoiding (hydrophobic) region, giving them distinctive behavior at interfaces and in solution. In polar solvents such as water, this dual structure drives self-assembly: hydrophobic groups cluster away from the solvent while hydrophilic groups remain exposed, producing organized structures such as micelles, bilayers, vesicles, or monolayers when concentration and temperature permit. In chemistry, amphiphiles are central to detergency, emulsification, membrane formation, drug delivery, and nanomaterial design. Their tunable molecular architecture also helps researchers control solubility, interfacial tension, transport, and the stability of dispersed systems.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Compound administration is often an integral component of an animal study. Many factors need to be evaluated to ensure that the compound is delivered correctly. The route of administration affects the mechanisms of absorption. The characteristics of the substance to be introduced (the pH, viscosity, and concentration) may dictate which route of administration is selected.

Atoms and Molecules Everything in the universe is made up of matter, and matter is composed of a combination of elements. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains all properties of the element. For example, a silver coin is made up of silver atoms, and each silver atom retains the unique properties of the element — silver. Elements are pure substances consisting of identical atoms that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes. Atomic elements contain...

Organic Compounds

2020

All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.
