Cyclic Compound Synthesis

Cyclic compound synthesis is the set of chemical strategies used to construct molecules containing one or more rings, important because ring size, shape, and substitution strongly influence molecular properties and reactivity. These methods form a new bond within a linear or partially assembled precursor, often through intramolecular cyclization, condensation, cycloaddition, or ring-closing metathesis; controlling reaction conditions helps favor the desired ring and stereochemistry. In chemistry, cyclic compound synthesis enables access to carbocycles and heterocycles found in pharmaceuticals, natural products, polymers, and functional materials. Efficient, selective ring formation therefore supports molecular design, drug discovery, and the preparation of structurally complex compounds.

Removal of Branched and Cyclic Compounds by Urea Adduction for Uk'37 Paleothermometry

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst As mentioned in previous videos, the product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. In the case of our two organic paleothermometers (Uk'37 and MBT/CBT), the interest is in only 6 compounds (2 alkenones and 4 isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol...

Stereoisomerism of Cyclic Compounds

2023

In this lesson, we delve into the role of ring conformation and its stability, which determines the spatial arrangement and, consequently, the molecular symmetry and stereoisomerism of cyclic compounds. 1,2-Dimethylcyclohexane is used as a case study to evaluate the possible number of stereoisomers. Here, given the multiple (n = 2) chiral centers, there are 2n = 4 possible configurations that lack a plane of symmetry, as the ring skeleton exists in a non-planar chair conformation. In addition,...

Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Kayla Green — Texas Christian University A Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiment involves the scan of a range of potential voltages while measuring current. In the CV experiment, the potential of an immersed, stationary electrode is scanned from a predetermined starting potential to a final value (called the switching potential) and then the reverse scan is obtained. This gives a 'cyclic' sweep of potentials and the current vs. potential curve derived from the data is...

Synthesis of Compound Giant Unilamellar Vesicles: A Biomimetic Model of Nucleate Cells

2025

This article presents a method for preparing compound Giant Unilamellar Vesicles (cGUVs) with a vesicle-in-vesicle structure, with customized electrical conductivity in inner, annular, and outer regions. Electroformation synthesizes simple GUVs, which are transformed into stomatocytes and cGUVs via osmotic shock, providing a valuable model for studying the biophysics of nucleated cells.
