Ethanol Induced Assembly

Ethanol-induced assembly is a chemical process in which ethanol triggers dissolved molecules or dispersed components to organize into larger, often ordered structures. Adding ethanol changes solvent polarity, hydrogen-bonding conditions, and solubility, shifting the balance of intermolecular forces and promoting association through processes such as aggregation, hydrophobic interactions, or molecular stacking. Depending on the system, this approach can generate supramolecular aggregates, fibers, films, or gels. In chemistry, controlling ethanol concentration, mixing, temperature, and component concentration helps researchers study self-assembly and tune structure, morphology, and stability for molecular materials, colloidal systems, and nanostructure formation.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Source: Shionoya, Y., et al. Ethanol-Induced Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion Block Applications for Promoting Canine Inferior Alveolar Nerve Regeneration Using an Artificial Nerve. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates a canine model for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) regeneration using a biodegradable scaffold and ethanol-induced sympathetic blockade. The procedure involves surgically accessing the cervical sympathetic ganglion and injecting ethanol to induce vasodilation. The resulting...

Sustained fibrosis with deposition of excessive extracellular matrix proteins leads to cirrhosis. Alcohol abuse is one of the main causes of severe liver disease. We established an ethanol-induced zebrafish fibrotic liver model to study the mechanisms and strategies of promoting hepatocyte regeneration upon alcohol-induced injury.
