Self-assembly Technique

Self-assembly is a technique in which molecules or nanoscale building blocks spontaneously organize into ordered structures through local interactions, offering a powerful route to create complex materials without direct fabrication. In chemistry, noncovalent forces such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, and π–π stacking guide components toward energetically favorable arrangements under controlled conditions. By adjusting solvent, concentration, temperature, pH, or molecular design, researchers can tune the structure and properties of assemblies including micelles, monolayers, supramolecular polymers, and crystals. The technique supports advances in nanotechnology, materials science, catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery.

A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Technique to Study Peptide Self-Assembly

2025

This video demonstrates the self-assembly of amyloid peptides into a beta sheet-rich supramolecular structure using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. An infrared beam is passed through a crystal with a high refractive index, and energy absorption across the interface of the crystal and the sample is recorded. The secondary structures of the sample proteins are identified by analyzing their characteristic absorption peaks at specific regions of the infrared spectrum, which aids in...
