Skin Surface Detection

Skin surface detection is the chemical identification or measurement of substances present on the outermost layer of the skin, providing a noninvasive way to study surface composition. The process typically involves collecting skin residues or secretions and analyzing them with methods that separate, identify, or quantify their molecular components, such as lipids, metabolites, contaminants, or applied compounds. In chemistry and related biomedical research, these measurements can characterize skin condition, assess environmental or occupational exposure, monitor topical formulations, and support biomarker studies. Improved detection strategies may strengthen noninvasive sampling and clarify how substances interact with the skin surface.

An Immunofluorescence Assay to Detect Alpha-Synuclein Aggregates in a Skin Biopsy Section

2025

This video demonstrates an immunofluorescence assay to detect neurodegenerative disease-specific alpha-synuclein aggregates on skin biopsy sections. Free-floating immunostaining is employed to fluorescently label the carboxyl-terminal hydrolase and the alpha-synuclein aggregates in the dermal neurons. Under a confocal microscope, cells with fluorescence from both antibodies indicate the presence of alpha-synuclein aggregates in the dermal neurons.

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of vitronectin's interaction with bacterial surface proteins. The flow-cytometry analysis measures the fluorescence signal of fluorescently labeled antibodies bound to vitronectin, confirming its presence at the bacterial surface. This technique provides insights into host-pathogen interactions and potential bacterial infection therapies.
