Sol-gel Process

The sol-gel process is a wet-chemical route for producing inorganic materials, especially oxide glasses, ceramics, and thin films, from molecular precursors under relatively mild conditions. In a typical reaction, metal alkoxides or related compounds undergo hydrolysis followed by condensation, linking species into a colloidal sol that progressively forms a three-dimensional gel; controlled drying and, when needed, heat treatment convert this network into a dense or porous solid. Because composition, structure, porosity, and coating thickness can be tuned during synthesis, the sol-gel process supports applications in optical coatings, catalysts, sensors, membranes, and biomedical materials, while offering precise control over material properties.

2013

A guided material screening approach to develop sol-gel derived protein doped microarrays using an emerging pin-printing method of fabrication is described. This methodology is demonstrated through the development of acetylcholinesterase and multikinase microarrays, which are used for cost-effective small-molecule screening.

Gel Purification

2023

Gel purification is used to recover DNA fragments after electrophoretic separation. DNA recovery from an agarose gel includes three basic steps: binding, washing and eluting from a silica column. DNA is believed to bind to silica in the presence of high salt via a salt bridge. Following binding, DNA is washed of impurities and eluted under low salt conditions disrupting this interaction. This video goes through a step-by-step, generalized procedure for cutting out a band from the gel, gel...

Agarose Fluid Gels Formed by Shear Processing During Gelation for Suspended 3D Bioprinting

Shear processing during hydrogel formation results in the production of microgel suspensions that shear-thin but rapidly restructure following the removal of shear forces. Such materials have been used as a supporting matrix for bioprinting complex, cell-laden structures. Here, methods used to manufacture the supporting bed and compatible bioinks are described.

DNA Gel Electrophoresis

2023

DNA gel electrophoresis is a technique used for the detection and separation of DNA molecules. An electric field is applied to a gel matrix comprised of agarose, and within the gel, charge particles will migrate and separate based on size. The negatively charged phosphates of the DNA backbone cause DNA fragments to move toward the anode - a positively charged electrode. The video explains the mechanism by which DNA fragments are resolved on an agarose gel, and it provides a step-by-step...
