Electrocardiography

Electrocardiography is the noninvasive process of recording the heart’s electrical activity over time, providing a rapid view of cardiac rhythm and conduction in clinical care. Surface electrodes detect voltage differences generated as myocardial cells depolarize and repolarize, and the signals are arranged into leads that produce characteristic waveforms, including the P wave, QRS complex, and T wave. Clinicians interpret these patterns to assess heart rate, rhythm, conduction abnormalities, myocardial ischemia, and other cardiac conditions, while serial or continuous recordings can track changes during treatment, monitoring, and research. The method remains central to screening, diagnosis, and risk assessment.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut An electrocardiograph is a graph recorded by electric potential changes occurring between electrodes placed on a patient's torso to demonstrate cardiac activity. An ECG signal tracks heart rhythm and many cardiac diseases, such as poor blood flow to the heart and structural abnormalities. The action potential created by contractions of the heart wall...

During murine myocardial ischemia/reperfusion surgery, correct placement of the occluding ligature is typically confirmed by visible observation of myocardial pallor. Herein, a method of electrocardiographically confirming ischemia and reperfusion, to supplement observed myocardial pallor, is demonstrated in male C57Bl/6 mice.
