Metered Dose Inhaler

A metered dose inhaler is a handheld device that delivers a precisely measured amount of medication to the lungs as an aerosol, making it an important tool for treating respiratory disease. When the canister is pressed, a propellant disperses the drug through the mouthpiece, and the user inhales the aerosol so medication can reach the airways; coordinated breathing or a spacer can improve delivery. Metered dose inhalers commonly administer bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs for conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Proper technique helps maximize lung deposition, reduce medication loss, and improve clinical outcomes.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Zhongqi He - United States Department of Agriculture Acids and bases are substances capable of donating protons (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-), respectively. They are two extremes that describe chemicals. Mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their extreme effects. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The values of proton concentration ([H+]) for most solutions are inconveniently small and difficult to compare so that a more practical...

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.

The inhalation unit described herein can generate, sample for characterization, and uniformly deposit a drug aerosol in the lungs of rodents. This enables the pre-clinical determination of the efficacy and safety of drug doses deposited in the lungs; key data enabling clinical inhaled drug development.

Inhaled Medications

2025

Inhaled medications are crucial for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They are essential for effective treatment and control, ensuring optimal respiratory health and well-being. Inhaled medication delivers drugs directly to the lungs, providing a rapid onset of action and reducing systemic side effects compared to oral or injectable medications. Three primary types of inhalation devices are used to administer these medications: nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers...
