Pap Test

A Pap test is a cervical cancer screening procedure that examines cells from the cervix for abnormal changes before cancer develops. During the test, a clinician collects cervical cells with a brush or spatula, preserves the sample, and sends it for cytological evaluation, where trained personnel assess cell appearance under a microscope; testing may also be paired with detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). The results help identify precancerous lesions that may require monitoring, additional testing, or treatment, reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality through timely intervention.

2010

Knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying gustatory transduction has recently enjoyed significant advances, largely due to using animal models. However, the wide diversity in taste sensitivity and specificity among mammals warrants studies in human tissue. We describe a biopsy technique to collect living taste cells from the papillae on human tongue.

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.
