Prostate Palpation

Prostate palpation is a physical examination used to assess the prostate through the rectal wall, helping clinicians evaluate gland size, shape, consistency, tenderness, and surface irregularities. During a digital rectal examination, a clinician inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum and gently palpates the prostate because its posterior surface lies immediately beyond the rectal wall. Findings such as enlargement, asymmetry, firmness, nodules, or pain can contribute to evaluating lower urinary tract symptoms, inflammation, or possible malignancy. Because palpation has limitations and cannot establish a diagnosis alone, abnormal findings typically guide additional assessment, such as laboratory testing or imaging.
