Abdominal Wounding

Abdominal wounding is a controlled or naturally occurring injury to tissues of the abdominal region, used to investigate how organisms repair damage and restore tissue function. The injury disrupts tissue integrity and can initiate hemostasis, inflammatory signaling, epithelial cell migration, proliferation, and remodeling. In developmental biology, researchers use abdominal wound models to examine how repair programs interact with tissue growth, differentiation, and regeneration during development. These studies can reveal conserved cellular and molecular mechanisms of wound closure, identify factors that regulate successful healing, and clarify why injured tissues recover differently across developmental stages.

The rat, due to its size, availability, and rather docile behavior, has been utilized as a research model for many years. The goal of this protocol is to utilize the rat as an ischemic skin wound healing model to provide valuable insight into the pathophysiology of chronic wounds.

2023

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...

Abdominal Exam II: Percussion

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...

Collecting And Measuring Wound Exudate Biochemical Mediators In Surgical Wounds

This article provides a detailed and visual description of a methodology for collecting and measuring biochemical inflammatory and nociceptive mediators at the surgical wound site following cesarean delivery. This human bioassay has been used to determine correlations between wound and serum cytokine concentrations and drug-mediated changes in wound cytokines, chemokines and neuropetides.

Colonoscopic Guided Murine Wound Model: A Method to Isolate Biopsy Induced Wound Bed from Colon to Understand the Healing Process
