Bovine Bone Matrix

Bovine bone matrix is the mineralized extracellular framework derived from cattle bone, providing structural and biochemical signals that support skeletal development and tissue organization. Its type I collagen network, hydroxyapatite minerals, and matrix-bound proteins create a three-dimensional environment that influences cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. In developmental biology, researchers use bovine bone matrix to study how extracellular cues regulate progenitor and stem cell behavior during bone formation and remodeling. It also serves as a biologically relevant scaffold for evaluating biomaterials, modeling osteogenesis, and developing approaches for bone repair and regenerative medicine.

The Bone Matrix

Bone contains a relatively small number of cells entrenched in a matrix of collagen fibers that provide an adherent surface for inorganic salt crystals. Both components of the matrix, organic and inorganic, contribute to the unusual properties of bone. Without collagen, bones would be brittle and shatter easily. Without mineral crystals, bones would flex and provide little support. This can be observed by an experiment: when the minerals of a bone are dissolved by soaking the bone in acid or...

This study assesses the fracture toughness of bovine cortical bone at the sub-meso levels using microscopic scratch tests. This is an original, objective, rigorous, and reproducible method proposed to probe fracture toughness below the macroscopic scale. Potential applications are studying changes in bone fragility due to diseases like osteoporosis.
