Nonlinear Contrast Ultrasound

Nonlinear contrast ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses injected gas-filled microbubbles to enhance ultrasound signals and reveal structures or blood flow that conventional ultrasound may not distinguish clearly. When exposed to an acoustic field, the microbubbles expand and contract asymmetrically, generating harmonic signals that can be separated from tissue echoes and used to produce high-contrast images. In developmental biology, this approach supports noninvasive visualization of embryonic and fetal circulation, vascular development, organ formation, and tissue perfusion. Its real-time capabilities can help researchers track dynamic developmental processes and assess how genetic or environmental changes affect vascular and organ development.

Insonation of microbubbles is a promising strategy for tumor ablation at reduced time-averaged acoustic powers, as well as for the targeted delivery of therapeutics. The purpose of the present study is to develop low duty cycle ultrasound pulsing strategies and nanocarriers to maximize non-thermal microvascular ablation and payload delivery to subcutaneous C6 gliomas.

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Causes of Nonlinearity

2025

Nonlinearity in drug pharmacokinetics is caused by various factors influencing how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Understanding these nonlinear processes is crucial for predicting drug behavior in the body and optimizing drug dosing regimens. Nonlinear drug absorption can occur when the process is rate-limited by solubility, carrier-mediated transport systems, or saturation of the presystemic gut wall or hepatic metabolism. For instance, high doses of riboflavin...

Saturable and reverse saturable scattering were discovered in isolated plasmonic particles and adopted as a novel non-bleaching contrast method in super-resolution microscopy. Here the experimental procedures of detecting and extracting nonlinear scattering are explained in detail, as well as how to enhance resolution with the aid of saturated excitation microscopy.
