Human Liver Organoids

Human liver organoids are three-dimensional, laboratory-grown tissue models that reproduce key structural and functional features of the liver, making them valuable for studying human development and disease. They form when stem or progenitor cells are cultured under conditions that support self-organization, with extracellular matrix and signaling cues guiding differentiation into liver cell types such as hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. In developmental biology, these organoids help researchers examine lineage specification, tissue organization, and maturation while reducing reliance on animal models. They also support studies of liver disease, drug responses, toxicity, and regenerative medicine, providing a controllable platform for investigating human-specific biology.
