Environmental Disturbance

Environmental disturbance refers to a natural or human-driven change in an organism’s physical, chemical, or biological surroundings that can alter development and ecological function. In developmental biology, factors such as temperature, nutrient availability, oxygen levels, pollutants, and habitat disruption can modify cell signaling, gene regulation, tissue formation, and developmental timing. Studying these effects reveals how embryos and organisms respond to stress, including through phenotypic plasticity, developmental delay, malformation, or reduced survival. This knowledge supports research on climate change, toxicology, disease, conservation, and the mechanisms that shape resilience across individuals and species.

Ecological Disturbance

2026

An ecological disturbance is a temporary disruption in the environment resulting from abiotic, biotic, or anthropogenic factors, causing a pronounced change in an ecosystem. The impact of an ecological disturbance, which can depend on its intensity, frequency, and spatial distribution, plays a significant role in shaping the species diversity within the ecosystem.Ecological disturbances can be caused by an event as small as the trampling of underbrush to an incident as wide-ranging as a forest...

Disturbances in Heart Rhythm

2025

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm caused by a defect in the heart's conduction system. It can cause the heart to beat irregularly, too quickly, or too slowly, leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. Factors such as stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, certain drugs, congenital defects, diseases, and electrolyte abnormalities can trigger arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are categorized by their speed, rhythm, and origin. A slow heart...

A Hemocyte Disturbance Assay to Assess Hemocyte Re-Adhesion to Hematopoietic Pockets

2025

This video demonstrates the hemocyte disturbance assay, evaluating hemocyte re-adhesion in Drosophila larvae's hematopoietic pockets. Mechanical disturbance releases resident hemocytes, elevating circulating hemocyte counts. Post-recovery, re-adherence of resident hemocytes is confirmed, illustrating reversibility.

Environmental Enrichment for Rodents

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...

Aseptic Technique in Environmental Science

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Aseptic technique is a fundamental skill widely practiced in the field of environmental microbiology that requires a balance of mindfulness and practice in the laboratory. Proper use of this technique reduces the likelihood of bacterial or fungal contamination of reagents, culture media, and environmental samples. Aseptic technique is also vital to ensure data integrity and...
