Composite Laminate Consolidation

Composite laminate consolidation is the process of transforming stacked fiber-reinforced polymer layers into a dense, structurally integrated component, making it central to reliable composite manufacturing. During consolidation, heat lowers resin viscosity while pressure drives the matrix through the reinforcement, removes trapped air, and promotes intimate contact between plies; continued heating can complete resin curing. The process may use an autoclave, heated press, or other controlled tooling, with temperature, pressure, and time governing fiber alignment, void content, thickness, and final mechanical performance. In engineering, effective consolidation improves strength and consistency in lightweight structures, while poor control can produce porosity, delamination, or uneven properties.

2017

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.
