Extraction Efficiency

Extraction efficiency is the proportion of a desired substance successfully recovered from a raw material, mixture, or process stream relative to the amount originally present. It depends on how effectively the extraction system promotes mass transfer, including the choice of solvent or separation medium, contact time, temperature, particle size, and the distribution of the target compound between phases. Engineers evaluate extraction efficiency to optimize solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, and other separation processes, reduce material and energy losses, and improve product quality. Measuring this outcome also supports process scale-up, equipment design, waste reduction, and consistent performance in chemical, environmental, food, and pharmaceutical applications.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a separation technique used instead of distillation when either: (a) the relative volatilities of the compounds to be separated are very similar; (b) one or more of the mixture components are temperature sensitive even near ambient conditions; (c) the distillation would require a very low pressure or a very high distillate/feed...

Techniques that are reliable and efficient for the isolation of kidney immune cells are needed for downstream applications. This requires surface antibody labeling of a small number of kidney immune cells. Herein, we describe a concise method for isolation of kidney immune cells that seemingly achieves this goal.

This protocol describes a rapid, reproducible organic solvent-based extraction and precipitation method for purifying elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) from Escherichia coli, providing a potentially scalable alternative to conventional ELP purification methods.

Extraction of Biomarkers from Sediments - Accelerated Solvent Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...
