Gated Recurrent Units

Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) are recurrent neural network architectures that model sequential and time-dependent data, making them valuable for engineering systems involving signals, sensors, and dynamic processes. At each time step, update and reset gates use sigmoid-activated functions to regulate how much of the previous hidden state is retained, discarded, or combined with a candidate state, allowing the network to capture dependencies across time. Compared with more complex recurrent designs such as long short-term memory networks, GRUs use fewer computational components and can be efficient to train. They support applications including time-series forecasting, speech processing, anomaly detection, and control-system modeling.

Measurement: Standard Units

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...

Recurrent Herpetic Stromal Keratitis in Mice, a Model for Studying Human HSK

Most studies of herpetic corneal disease use a primary infection model. However, primary infection with HSV-1 does not typically lead to human disease. Here we describe a recurrent model of herpetic corneal disease, which more closely mimics human disease.
